A new administrative agreement opens up funding opportunities from the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund for investments in the fisheries sector.
This year, the Minister of Regional and Rural Affairs signed an agreement with the Rural Development Foundation to implement the 2021–2027 measures of the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) in Estonia. The agreement provides the fisheries sector with new investment opportunities, allocating a total budget of up to €9.16 million for eligible activities.
The support is aimed at various activities: reducing the ecological footprint of commercial fishing, improving energy efficiency, and developing safety and electronic data transmission systems on fishing vessels. Up to 85% of eligible costs can be covered, depending on the type of investment – whether it's equipment purchases or the installation of control systems.
In practice, this support can be used in several ways. For example, grants can be applied for under ice-fishing development projects by submitting applications directly to PRIA (the Agricultural Registers and Information Board). Support is also available for updating fishing gear – such as replacing four similar types of fyke nets. All companies registered in the commercial register and involved in professional fishing are eligible to apply.
This shows that PRIA’s support can be used for both large-scale vessel and technology upgrades and for smaller improvements such as gear replacement. The measures are aimed at improving both ecological sustainability and operational quality. Application periods and specific conditions are published by PRIA, including detailed evaluation and payment procedures.
Summary:
This is a significant step in modernizing the fisheries sector by promoting sustainability, energy efficiency, and safer working conditions.
